Day Trip on Chiemsee from Munich

How to get from Munich to Chiemsee

Getting to Chiemsee from Munich is luckily pretty easy, and you have means of doing it either by a car or train system. From Munich to Chiemsee you’ll spend about 1 hour by car or 1 hour by train going in each direction.

Here are two popular ways to get to Chiemsee from Munich:

By train

Transit time: About 1 hour (in one direction)

We always use Trainline to buy train tickets, it conveniently shows all available connections and helps to choose the best ticket. Usually we buy Bayern Ticket as it is covering there-and-back way if you travelling in one day.

When you arrive at Prien, it is right around the corner (1 minute’s walk) to the old train depot where you can buy a ticket at the ticket office, which includes a fare to the pier and a tour of the islands and towns.

The most convenient way to get to the lake from Munich if you travel by train is to go to Prien and then buy a special tourist ticket for the ferry trip and historical train which would take you to the lake (and back). The historical Chiemsee-Bahn from Prien Bahnhof to Prien/Stock Hafen running each hour from 10:15 till 18:15. And back from Prien/Stock Hafen to Prien Bahnhof each hour from 9:30 to 17:40.

Things to do at Chiemsee

  • Prien am Chiemsee
  • Herreninsel - the biggest of three main islands, Fraueninsel and “Krautinsel” in Bavaria’s largest lake. Herreninsel is famous for the Herrenchiemsee palace of Ludwig II of Bavaria.
  • Fraueninsel - the smallest municipality in all of Bavaria and very beautiful island with only 300 inhabitants. This island is so small that you could walk around it in 30 minutes.
  • Gstadt - The second biggest town around the Chiemsee that you can visit using the ferry.
  • Chiemseepark fields
  • Seebruck

How ferries work at Chiemsee

To see as much as possible, I suggest buying the Grand Tour Chiemsee ticket that will take you to all the islands and several cities near Cheimsee. This ticket allows you to get off anywhere and get on the next ferry whenever you want.
